‘Lost’ Podcasting Downfall: The Great Name Debate

Written By: Colleen - Aug• 16•10

So after Comic Con, Jay & I fostered one of Heather’s kittens for a night while we found her a home with my co-worker’s sister-in-law.  This kitten was the runt of her litter & super tiny.  She was absolutely adorable and actually really liked me (animals liking me better than Jay just doesn’t happen).  She fell asleep in my arms that night.  Poor Zoe had a temper tantrum over the kitten being there for a night & refused to come out of the man cave for the day.  I felt really badly actually but it was only for a night, so we decided to just let her sulk and deal with it lol.

Here’s an idea of how small she was:

But perhaps the coolest thing was Jay & I taught her how to play Uzu on the iPad.  She was fascinated by the iPad:

So anyway, this all leads into something, I promise.  We didn’t want to get too attached to her, so we didn’t give her a name (her new owners named her Audrey).  I did, however, go on a name meaning site and start looking up some names just to see what would be a nice name to suggest to her new mom.  Idk, I like doing things like that.  I got super involved in looking at different names and then looking up where my name, Jay’s, my sisters, Jay’s sisters, etc. fell in popularity over the last few years.  I was looking at a list of the Top 1,000 names, too, for both boys and girls.  I’m not one of those people who has all their baby names picked out years in advance, mainly because I think that’s bad luck to do that.  But that’s just me.

The following exchange took place later on:

Me: “I like the name Jacob.  That’s not a bad name.”

Jay: “Eehhh, Jacob? I don’t know.  Could be too…I don’t know if I could use the name Jacob.”

Me: “Why not? Twilight fever won’t last forever.  People won’t associate that Jacob with Twilight in like 5 years.”

Jay <Pause, incredulous look>: “I don’t care about Twilight.”

Me: “Then what’s the big deal?!”

Jay <slowly>: “Lost…?”

Me <Beat>: “OH YEAH!!”

So here’s my question.  Since Jay’s got that whole Lost Podcast thing, does this mean that any Lost name is out of the picture for us to use in the future?  I think that pets are one thing, but is it fair to subject our future children to a Lost name that we just happen to like when they’ll probably spend the rest of their lives avoiding Comic Con so people don’t go “You’re JAY’S kid?! And your name is Ben?  How adorable!  Smile creepy for us, little Ben!  How’s Hurley doing, little Ben?” or “Hey, little Charlotte! Do you have a bloody nose? Would you like a chocolate bar?”

I think that’s why celebrities give their kids such f*cked up names.  They have to go for a name that can never be associated with any project they’ve ever worked on or character they’ve ever played lol.  Let’s face it: Jennifer Aniston could never have a kid named Rachel.  So that’s what I’ve been wondering for the last week and a half.  What do you think about it?

Only the cutest kitty ever! My take on the name thing… name your kid whatever you like. If it’s Lost related why not, you guys love Lost and it would be a tribute to a fantastic show. But Jennifer Aniston most definitely cannot name her kid Rachel, that’s just weird. LOL

  2. Joel says:

I say go for it. Hell, i named my son Sawyer, so why not name a cat, which by definition won’t live THAT long, after a Lost character. I think the best name would be…wait for it… Man in Cat! LOL. Jacob works too i suppose.

  3. Colleen says:

Ah, maybe I should clarify. If we named a child after a “Lost” character, it WOULDN’T be ‘after a Lost character.’ It would be because we liked the name but everyone would automatically associate the name with ‘Lost’ which we wouldn’t want them to do but I guess that answers my question lol that they would anyway. Booo!

  4. Joel says:

I guess that’s where we differ… i WANT people to make that connection because Lost was so important to me. It’s a good conversation starter. lol. Plus i looked up all the student names in surrounding schools and there wasnt 1 sawyer. I was going for “different” i guess u could say.

  5. Joel says:

Plus, i think a lot of the names from Lost are generic enough that it wouldn’t matter. “Jack” could be taken as an homage to Jay’s dad, John is one of the most common names ever, etc. I think it’s worth a consideration but i guess this is supposed to be about a cat. lol. just go with whispers. OHHH i like that. lol

  6. Colleen says:

lol Joel, looking up the names in surrounding schools was pretty awesome, I’ll give you that.

  7. Nicola says:

I would love to have seen jays face when you associated Jacob with twilight and not lost!

I have a daughter named Cassidy and only realised the lost connection myself after she was names but u thought it was pretty cool. Most names on lost are commonplace names anyway so if you did name your kid with the same name as a character just because you happen to like the name I think it’s fine unless you called him Boone, that’s an awful name regardless! I agree with Jay though, I could never call a kid Jacob now, but I probably wouldn’t have even before lost.

  8. Nicola says:

Named and I. Please excuse my typos. iPod only has a small keypad.

  9. Madolin says:

We named our cat Sawyer after Sawyer on LOST but we are naming our son Ben and all of our LOST watching friends always joke about it being after Ben Linus. It’s really after Ben Kenobi though, yeah nerds FTW

  10. Lynn says:

Just wanted to say, what a cute cat!

  11. Yeah sure, you should definitely name you’re child Rachel, oh wait …that’s not what the article was about. Umm… I do like the name Jacob, but names like Jack and Kate are pretty common, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a name ‘from’ Lost, but perhaps …inspired.

  12. Colleen says:

@Nicola – I love the name Cassidy, one of my close friends is named that and it’s funny because whenever there was a Cassidy reference on ‘Lost,’ I *always* thought, “Hey, they stole Cassidy’s name!”

@Madolin & Joel and anyone else who cares – We know a girl in Raleigh who named her son Sawyer Locke. I don’t think she ever saw an episode of the show but knew they were character names. She got Sawyer from a character on “One Tree Hill” & I think Locke was a name in her husband’s family. Now THAT’S a coincidence that I’d stay away from for us lol.

    @Lynn – Thanks :)

Another, and more geeky, reason people are choosing unusual, strange, and outright bizarre names for their kids? The fact that common names (and semi-common last names) are unavailable as domain names, or online profiles. In fact, before finalizing a name, you should make sure you can get firstnamelastname.com.

Not that there are a million Glatfelters out there, but still!

There are a handful of other people out there with my exact name, and if it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve been online and all over the web for over 15 years, there could be much confusion out there. (Meanwhile, it must suck to be one of the other people with my name. I’m obnoxious!)

Or am I the only person who worries about this kind of thing?

  14. Colleen says:

hahahahahaha Ryan you just cracked me up

  15. Mandy says:

I think you choose the name you like and associate it to who or what you like. Just like Madolin chose Ben because of Ben Kenobi while we all may think of Ben from Lost. I thought of a name for our new kitten, but Tom knew the name from someone in his childhood. We didn’t pick that name, because he would always associate it with her. In the end, we picked a name that we both like, and for me it is one of my favorite characters of all time.

    We picked Luna. ;)

  16. Linda says:

You could name your kids Penelope and Benjamin. Then when they do a podcast with their Dad, it could be The P,B, and Jay Show.

  17. Colleen says:

    @Linda hahahahahahahahahaha That is BRILLIANT.

  18. Ashleigh says:

My friend had that same problem. She is a big Lost and 24 fan. Her cats are named Kiefer and Sawyer and when she got pregnant she decided she wanted to name her baby Jack (it’s her husbands grandfathers name) but she was nervous that everyone would think it was from her two favourite shows!
It was all for nothing anyway, she had (my Goddaughter) Sophie last week. :)

  19. eric says:

That cat looks like a Nadia :-)

  20. Carly says:

One problem with Lost is that it had sooo many characters, it might be hard to avoid picking a name that was used on the show.

The kitty is adorable. I bet she was hard to give up!

  21. There are many girls around which are delving keen on buying a bunch of mascaras and they simply get to be fooled over through the TV advertisements plus ultimately, after they’ll have used up a lot of money on numerous makeup and have absolutely also deteriorated their skin in practise, because everyone knows that in time, once you will apply large amounts of make up your skin will suffer the consequences.
