Because I’m human, every so often, I do get down and out that I’m currently doing nothing career-wise in relation to what I have a degree (or 2 or 3) in (Journalism, P.R., English, Theatre…take your pick…). And then, like a melodramatic 25-year-old with friends who actually do what they have degrees in, I do get a little bit sad and/or upset as to why I don’t really do anything career-wise of the sort and chances seem slim that I ever will, even though every thing I’ve done since college has been a conscious decision made. And I like where I am now regardless. Emo. Emo. Emo. Emo. Alert!
Then I see something like this and I feel better about myself:
The article is about Melanie Griffin checking into rehab for the 3rd time in like 8 years and who cares blah blah blah blah blah she probably just wants attention or something for making it public since no one really bothers to follow that bitch around anymore any way so it’s not like she couldn’t go to rehab and keep it a secret. Anyway. Catch the mistake yet?
Ha. Ha. And whoever wrote this has a degree like I do.
Hire me, yo. At least I know how to tell genders apart.

Colleen, don’t feel bad. I have degrees in Communications with a concentration in Journalism, as well as a degree in Criminal Justice. And you want to know what I do for a living?? Its embarrassing, but I know it’ll make you feel better…so here goes…Im a cashier at a Six Flags Souvenir shop. Why? Meh…dont know.
I have a degree in Anthropology and only recently started using it to produce a podcast; Getting Cultured (www.gettingcultured.com)
I’ve always thought that a degree meant that you’ve proven you can research and comprehend university-level content, nothing more.
I love teaching people how to use software; I’m very good at it. I don’t think I’d enjoy archaeology as much as I enjoy what I do now.
I totally know how you feel. I went back to grad school to deal with that feeling, and am now working on my Ph.D. Most of my high school friends are married and successful, and I’m still in school, and feel like my adult life hasn’t really started. Just remember, it’s only society’s standards, which are totally constructed, that make us think we have to achieve certain goals–determine your goals for yourself and forget other people. As a woman, society thinks I should be married, or at least in a serious relationship, by 27, but I say f*#k it–If I want to be independent, that’s my choice.
you guys kinda all kick ass. thanks
Well, in defense of the author, Antonio does have long hair. He confuses me sometimes as well. That is an easy mistake
Don’t worry about the degree/work thing. I lucked up big time by stumbling upon Info Systems in college b/c of a fraternity brother who was taking classes for his CIS major. If it wasn’t for him, I would be in marketing! My wife was a French major and ended up doing event planning for Bank Of America here in Charlotte. Now she’s a stay at home mom and can’t translate movies for me when they speak French and don’t put subtitles!
I don’t have a degree, but all i want to do is film and edit, and yet i pine away daily at my desk doing things like answer the phone, enter information & do the website. Point is, who knows where we end up and why…but it usually is for the best.
What you got your degree in isn’t important. The important thing is whether you’re doing what you like to do. I work with lots of people who aren’t doing what they got their degrees in, and most of them enjoy their current jobs. I also know plenty of people who are unhappy doing what they got their degrees in, including me a few years ago.
Don’t worry about it Colleen. As has already been mentioned, one of the main things a degree shows is that you have the skills necessary to complete a degree. I have a degree in Marketing but I’ve been in banking for almost 20 years and on the Info Technology side of the banking industry for over 10. Right now you’re doing something that brings in a paycheck and allows you the freedom to work on the various websites you’re involved in. And last time I checked, journalism does apply in NuNews, right?
